 The Production Guru course is delivered over four days of intensive face to face training, where participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of Production Management within the television industry and key legal, financial and personal development skills.

All participants will apply their knowledge and learning through a production management project together with evaluation and critical reflection on the production process. Successful participants will gain the Production Guru certificate recognised by employers and 20 post graduate credits awarded by the University of Salford, International Media Centre (IMC).

Course Content
The Production Guru course examines the role and core skills of a Production Manager and provides detailed analysis of: 

  • The commissioning process and role of the PM
  • Legal Issues and Compliance (music and archive copyright, clearances, editorial guidelines, insurance, rights)
  • Logistics (scheduling, pre-production/production/post-production, budgeting and cashflows, digital workflows and paperwork)
  • The Production Office (Contracts, Licences, HR systems)
  • Personal Skills (working with freelancers, negotiating deals and influencing, managing a team, time management and planning).

Production Guru is delivered at the International Media Centre in Salford, over four days by experts from television production and production management backgrounds as well as subject specific guest speakers. You will also benefit from being able to network with other like minded professionals, as well as develop your knowledge and skills in the specific area of study. Delivery of the course includes: a combination of workshops, small group work, on-line tutorials, and classroom taught provision. All participants have access to IT to assist learning.

Support
To complement the knowledge gained from the four day course, an additional seven weeks of online tuition/support is available; culminating in the award of 20 Masters level (M) credits, which you can use to build your own tailored Post Graduate Certificate/ Diploma or full Masters degree.

Career Progression

This innovative course is designed and delivered by experienced academics and practitioners to meet the needs of those wishing to pursue careers within media production, in particular Production Management. Content is relevant and up to date and focuses on current industry trends, developments and issues.
The course has been specifically designed to analyse production management roles within both the larger broadcasters including the BBC and ITV, as well as the independent production sector. On successful completion of the Production Guru participants should have gained an understanding of how PM roles vary within the television industry and be equipped to pursue a career in this area.

Existing Experience
Production Guru is suitable for those who have had some experience within the media industry and understand the production process within television. It applies to current television production management staff and freelancers who are keen to gain further skills and add this employer-led course to their portfolio and provides professional progression through a recognised and respected qualification for junior production staff.

The academies are based across the United Kingdom and offer industry-focused, professional development short courses to fit around busy media professionals. All courses within the Build Your Own MA scheme offering participants the option to gain postgraduate credits and accumulate these across the Academy network to build a qualification portfolio.
