A touring cinema scheme aimed at improving access to a high quality digital cinema experience for rural communities will present a series of pilot screenings across Cumbria and Lancashire this winter. Cine North will tour village halls and community centres across the North West, including Brigsteer, Edgworth, Newton, in the Forest of Bowland and Downham. The film season opens this Friday 9th December, with a screening of West is West at Helsington & Brigsteer Village Hall, Kendal.
Organisers have worked in partnership with local promoters across Cumbria and Lancashire to tailor a programme of events uniquely for their local communities, with screenings ranging from much loved classics such as Casablanca, to the latest blockbuster children’s hits such as Gnomeo and Juliet. Some events offer additional opportunities for communities to come together and celebrate film, including a screening of Alice in Wonderland with a Mad Hatters Tea Party and a sing along screening of smash hit Mamma Mia!, featuring live cabaret entertainment.
Cine North is delivered by Cine Yorkshire and Blaize, in association with rural arts specialists Spot On and Highlights Rural Touring Scheme. The decision to extend the rural cinema pilot scheme to the North West follows an incredibly successful year for Cine Yorkshire, which launched in North Yorkshire in October 2010. Cine North is supported by the BFI, Creative England and the National Media Museum, Bradford.
Emily Penn, Cine Yorkshire Project Manager, says:
"We’re incredibly excited to be launching Cine North and hope that audiences in the North West will embrace the scheme with the same enthusiasm that has been demonstrated by rural communities in North Yorkshire. Cinema can inspire, educate and celebrate our culture, but perhaps most importantly, it brings people together in communities where opportunities for unifying social experiences are becoming increasingly rare. Since our first screening in October 2010, we’ve shown over 500 films to more than 16,000 people, many of whom live hours away from their nearest cinema. Thanks to ongoing support from the BFI, we are able to offer a professional cinematic experience on top quality HD cinema equipment at venues that have included village halls, stately homes, mills, community centres and even a yurt at a music festival. Support from Creative England has enabled us to bring the rural film experience to audiences in the North West."
