Cumbria the new Hollywood

FILMMAKERS CONSIDER CUMBRIA AS THE NEW HOLLYWOOD

CUMBRIA could become the new Hollywood, with the success of soon-to-be released, Miss Potter, bringing top film location scouts to the region.

North West Vision, the film, TV and digital media agency, is bringing six members of the Guild of Location Managers to the region, helping them hunt out potential filming locations.

The trip has been organised by North West Vision’s Cumbria Film Liaison Officer, Alan Saywell, who played a pivotal role in bringing the eagerly anticipated Hollywood blockbuster, Miss Potter, to the county.

Cumbria is preparing to demonstrate its unique characteristics to the rest of the world when the film, starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, is screened at a special Cumbria Premiere on 17th December at The Royalty Cinema in Bowness-on-Windemere.

Alan assisted Miss Potter’s production team around the Lake District throughout the summer, helping to secure filming locations and source local film crews. He now hopes to attract a newfound interest in the beautiful landmarks and variety of locations on offer in the region. Alan said: “The scenery across Cumbria is absolutely stunning and it is a pleasure to be in a position to demonstrate this to visiting filmmakers.”

The Guild of Location Managers is an organisation for professionals working in the film, television and advertising industries. The London-based group will arrive in Carlisle on Tuesday 12th December and take a plane journey along the west coast of Cumbria, from Workington to Barrow-in-Furness, returning to Carlisle via the Central Lakes. Alan explained: “The coastline is a breathtaking area of the Northwest and incorporates beautiful beaches, industrial areas and stunning vistas.”

A boat journey is also planned on one of the Ullswater Steamers, allowing the filmmakers to take in views of Helvellyn, the Pennines and the beautiful shoreline of the lake itself. Visits are also planned to stately home, Hutton-in-the-Forest , Penrith, and Yew Tree Farm, Coniston, a key location in the Miss Potter movie.

The visitors will also have the opportunity to meet North West Vision’s Film Officers from Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Warrington and Cheshire.

One of the location managers making the trip, Rikkie Dakin, has worked previously in Cumbria and hopes her colleagues, who are unfamiliar with the area, will greatly benefit from the visit. She said: “We are hoping that everybody will have a chance to see something spectacular. It will be great for us to get an overview of the area and see exactly what is on offer. Hopefully, we’ll be able to consider Cumbria for future filming work.”

Alan Saywell, North West Vision’s Cumbria Film Liaison Officer added: “Cumbria is unbelievably vast and covers a great deal of locations, many of which TV and filmmakers have yet to explore. This is an ideal opportunity to promote the region to key workers in the industry. I hope that they will return to London with lots of confidence in the Lake District and surrounding areas, so that we can look forward to even more feature film productions like Miss Potter taking place in the area.”
