Flashlight

To the north of Manchester, within the vast grounds of Heywood’s distribution park, Flashlight UK has established itself as a highly successful business, providing lighting supplies to the film, TV and theatre industries.

Andy Dodd, Company Director, explains: “We’re the only national distributors for all of the most popular lighting brands outside of London and we’re based conveniently on the doorstep of the Northwest region.”

Flashlight has an exclusive database of clients ranging from the high profile Indies such as Hot Animation and Cosgrove Hall to major broadcasters ITV and the BBC/Granada joint venture 3Sixty Media.

A recent addition to their circle of customers is the Salford Quays Pie Factory, which should promise a good future of supply and demand for the lighting based specialists.

“Ironically, we used to be based on premises close to the Pie Factory but it’s fantastic that we now have a much larger operating area with a showroom and trade counter facilities. We’re in a great position to work with key contacts and we’re here to supply rental companies, studios and individual production companies,” says Andy

One of the main appeals for companies using Flashlight is that they provide a daily, free-of-charge service van that delivers to organisations across Manchester and the Northwest throughout the week. Flashlight is also the only authorised distributor in the UK for sales in Arri Lighting equipment.

This year Andy and his business partner, Rob Williamson, explain that they expect to have a turnover that will exceed £2 million by August 2007. That’s impressive when you consider that they only set up in August 2002 and that they currently employ five members of staff.

Andy and Rob both have years of experience behind them and it goes without saying that they’ve taken some risks to get the company to where it is today. “It can often be very hard work but we’re committed to what we do and have a good network of opportunities as members of PLASA (the Professional Sound and Lighting Association) STLD [Society of Television Lighting Directors] and similar supporting bodies,” says Andy.

“70% of the what we do is directly related to film and TV and with theatre and corporate hire, this brings in a further, but steady, remainder of the business.

“Some of the projects we’ve worked with this year include supplying Granada Studios with LED lighting for Granada Play, providing Coronation Street with Arri and Quartzcolor lighting and kitting Channel M out with Portable kits and KinoFlo lights.”

Other branded equipment that Flashlight can adequately supply includes Martin (moving lights), ETC, Zero 88 (lighting controls) Dedolight and various fluorescent, low energy equipment as well as all leading brands of replacement lamps, Lee Filters, lighting Grip and consumables.
