The Capernwray Diving Centre

Based at Jackdaw Quarry, in Over Kellet, near Carnforth, this months location was chosen after Lancashire Film Officer, Lynda Bannister, visited the 11 acre freshwater lake and was mesmerized by the crystal clear water and the beautiful rural setting.

“It’s a truly stunning location, with unique facilities, and deserves to be singled out for praise. There’s already been a tremendous amount of interest from TV producers, and I’m certain it’s only a matter of time before the location attracts the attention of filmmakers,” says Lynda.

As the UK's leading scuba centre, Capernwray Diving Centre already has a variety of underwater objects to film, such as a helicopter, boat and oil platform, but there’s also the option of further underwater sets being constructed.

“The whole site is surrounded by high cliffs with grassland and woods near-by and because it’s only 10 minutes from the M6 it’s really easy to get to,” explains Lynda.

The location has already been used for two shoots, with top ITV soap, Emmerdale, using the quarry to film a stunt scene. “A car was driven over the cliff edge and into the quarry during the dramatic Sadie exit storyline,” confides Adam Hanlon, from the dive centre.

Lime Pictures (formerly Mersey TV) also filmed their pilot drama series, Outsiders, at Capernwray – and made Adam the star of the show. “The production company wanted to film someone falling out of a helicopter into what appeared to be the sea, but which was in fact the quarry. They asked me to be the stuntman – and I said yes!” adds Adam.

Lancashire is no stranger to the TV and film industry, having recently reported £7 million pounds worth of inward investment, gained from productions filmed in the area.

“Lancashire is well known in filming circles because of its great centralised location, with cities, two airports and an array of talented production companies all within easy reach,” says Lynda.

“I’m constantly being asked by film and TV location managers to show them the best of what Lancashire has to offer, and we’re never short of somewhere new to showcase. It’s a wonderful area, and truly deserves the accolade of being chosen as North West Vision’s Location of the Month,” she adds.

North West Vision’s Chief Executive, Alice Morrison, adds:

“Every area has something special to offer, but this former quarry has so many hidden delights”

“Having our own Film Liaison Film Officer, Lynda Bannister, covering Lancashire has made it possible for us to single out special areas like the Over Kellet site and bring it to the attention of filmmakers and producers.”

North West Vision has four other sub-regional film offices, covering Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cumbria and Cheshire.
