Croxteth Hall

Built in 1575 and located on the outskirts of Liverpool, Croxteth Hall is an Edwardian Country house with beautiful surroundings including a country park, a Victorian walled garden and Croxteth Home Farm, a traditional working farm.

Historically, the hall has housed generations of the Molyneux family, the Earls of Sefton, who resided in the grounds from the sixteenth century until the death of the last Earl in 1972.

The long and vibrant history of the hall has inevitably brought some spooky tales and ghostly facts to light over the years. This explains a visit by Living TV’s Most Haunted team who reported strange sounds, footsteps and moving objects.

In contrast to the paranormal appeal, the current BBC drama, Lilies, was recently shot around Croxteth Hall, confirming its great potential as a setting for periodic themes.

Julia Carder, Croxteth Hall’s Curator, explains: “Sherlock Holmes, Forsyth Saga, Hollyoaks, Most Haunted and Lilies are some of the well known programmes that have shot here over recent years. We have also had many ‘extreme makeover’ styled programmes, photo shoots and even a few music videos.

“I think that the unique appeal of the hall lies in the periodic architecture that really suits pieces of drama such as Lilies. The separate sections such as the staircase and the corridors are very adaptable - you can fit the location to suit different eras very well.

“For external shots, plenty is on offer within the woodland areas whilst internal areas can always be changed to suit the requirements of TV and filmmakers.”

James Muirhead, Location Manager for BBC’s Lilies adds: "Croxteth Hall offered many period 1920’s locations for BBC’s Lilies. The property offers productions not only a multitude of excellent backdrops but a very warm welcome.

“This is almost a unique location in that it offers three totally different exterior elevations so location managers could tick off three exteriors in one location! With a period kitchen, never an easy find, as well as numerous reception rooms, bedrooms, offices, servants quarters on the top floor and now a new lift.

"Lilies often dropped in on Croxteth Hall when the weather got the better of us and providing there were no major bookings they were always happy to accommodate us at short notice.”

Alice Morrison, Chief Executive at North West Vision said: “If you are filming in the Liverpool area or even Manchester, they are situated on the east side, for a period location you would be crazy not to say hello. It could be all your locations in one!”
