Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker
Shhhhhh this one's a secret. A secret nuclear bunker, dating back to the Cold War.
Once one of the Nation's secret defence sites, Hack Green played a
central role in the defence of Britain for almost sixty years. As
you approach the site over the picturesque farmland and rolling
Cheshire countryside, it's hard to imagine a more peaceful
location, but it was not always this way.
The nuclear bunker at Hack Green was a Regional Government headquarters, a vast 35000 sq. ft bunker, staffed by 140 government officials at a time of nuclear conflict. Re-built in the I980s at a cost of over £32 million, the self-contained complex had decontamination facilities, it's own power station, water supplies, radio communications, telephone exchange and much more. 1998 saw the bunker open for the first time in over 50 years.
Filming at Hack Green
For productions, the undoubted advantage of Hack Green is that the
original features and eerie atmosphere, have been carefully
maintained by Rod Seibert, the site's curator. He said:
"Filmmakers should come to Hack Green because for underground and Cold War filming, there is no-where else as big and comprehensively equipped to go! Hack Green is unique and extends to 3500sqft of filmable space, with a labyrinth of spooky corridors and fully equipped realistic war rooms.
We can offer filmmakers authentic backgrounds with real atmosphere, and the canteen is good too."
A range of productions have taken advantage of Hack Green's facilities spanning across drama and documentary to pop promos. Some examples include: Murder in Mind, Ghostboat and live broadcasts for SKY, ITN and BBC.
Film Liaison Officer for Cheshire, Emma Welland:
"Hack Green is definitely one of our more unusual locations and is a piece of real history. Filmmakers really need to visit Hack Green to see and believe the scope of what it can offer."
