Media Foundation Placement Scheme

The Media Foundation Placement Scheme (MFPS) provides on-the-job training and career development within the media industry for Northwest people from an ethnic minority background.

The scheme is a partner initiative between Northwest Vision and Media, the North West Development Agency, ITV, BBC, and LIME Pictures, and since its inception in 2005, it has provided 36 training opportunities.

As a positive action scheme, MFPS is designed to have an immediate and long-term impact, addressing under representation of people from ethnic minority groups. It stimulates changes in working practices, behaviours and attitudes and has a direct influence on the diversity and ideas of programme content.

MFPS also raises equal opportunities awareness amongst current staff, together with in-house development of coaching and mentoring skills, bringing fresh ideas, creativity and new concepts to the industry.

Although there are no guarantees or expectations of employment at the end of the scheme, all participants are offered a 12-month placement, during which time they are paid a training allowance and offered the support of a designated buddy and external mentor.

Trainees are also offered a short attachment with a regional independent company, together with a two-week DV project, and a formal review process throughout.
