Moving Memories gets BBC Premiere
Moving Memories, a short film that recounts childhood
and working life in Moss Side and Hulme is to be seen by viewers on
BBC1 prime time.
This nostalgic film tells the story of the first and
second generation communities that resided in the area,
particularly those of Irish, Caribbean and Sikh heritage.
Uniquely, it mixes historic BBC footage held in the North West Film
Archive with contemporary interviews which allow local people to
tell the story in their own words.
Premiered at Hulme's Afewe pub in October 2009, Moving Memories:
Tales of Moss Side and Hulmehas received huge acclaim from local
people, academics, entertainers, politicians and local
historians.
Such is its success, the BBC has chosen to broadcast it on Inside
Out - Monday, 25 January 7.30pm - in a shortened format.
Produced and directed by popular culture specialist and broadcaster
Karen Gabay with the considerable input of local people, the short
film emerged following a public vote for community projects at
Manchester Metropolitan University.
Archive Director and MMU Public Engagement Fellow Marion Hewitt
said: "The power of the film is that it positions local people and
families as the storytellers. They give their own interpretations
and reflections of their journeys and present the story from the
viewpoint of 21st century Hulme and Moss Side."
Karen is interested in hearing from more participants for two
future Moving Memories films, particularly people’s memories
from 1950s-1980s of the attractions at Belle Vue, and ex -workers
at local factories in Moss Side, Hulme, Old Trafford and
Ardwick
