so You Want To Be a Scriptwriter

SO YOU WANT TO BE A STORY EDITOR?

A NEW two-day workshop presented by Stephen Cleary (Arista)

Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September 2007
BBC Oxford Road, Manchester.

Participation on the workshop is free of charge, but places are limited to 12 participants. Final day to submit your details will be Friday 31st August 2007.

Screen Agencies like the UK Film Council and Northwest Vision and Media are constantly looking for experienced story editors and script readers to employ when assessing feature film screenplays and supporting new writers.

Many production companies also employ story editors to help develop feature film and television projects. If you’re interested in forging a career in this area, then this fantastic new two- day workshop could be the best place to start.

So You Want To Be A Story Editor? is aimed at any film or TV professional – writer, script editor, producer – who is interested in learning how to be an effective story developer, able to work either full-time or freelance.

Designed and presented by Stephen Cleary, one of the UK’s premier developers, Stephen has over 60 developed feature credits and is the founder and leader of Arista, the UK’s premier private film development agency.

As the workshop looks to stimulate the growth of freelance story developers in the Northwest, to serve the full range of stories emerging from the entire community, the workshop will look to include as full and diverse a range of participants as possible.

A good Story Editor needs to combine a range of skills, combining good technical understanding of stories with sound development practice: technical understanding is no good if you can’t communicate properly to the people you are working with.

The workshop combines detailed technical instruction with a guide to best practice in development. It will also show you the size of the industry, how it is structured and funded, define the developer’s job in relation to the other creative professionals involved and describe how to make a living as a freelance story developer.

Areas covered by the workshop include:

· how to make a technical analysis of a story
· how to work with creative individuals
· how to intervene in order to have a constructive effect
· how to define and respect boundaries
· how to understand story structure
· how your development work fits into a broader industry context

So if you’d like to sharpen your skills as a story developer, add another professional string to your bow and create a new area of paid freelance activity for yourself, then this workshop could be exactly what you need.

It takes place on the 8th and 9th September 2007 at the BBC, Oxford Road, Manchester. Applicants will be selected by Stephen Cleary.

To apply, send your CV, and a covering letter describing why you want to attend the workshop, and why you think you should participate, to Stephen Cleary stephen@aristotle.co.uk

You can send your details to Stephen at any time. As places for this course are limited and will be allocated on approval of submission we recommend you get your submissions in early. Submissions will not be considered after Friday 31st August 2007.
