Southport on Film Screening

THE North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University is pleased to announce Southport on Film, a part of its programme to make this fascinating collection available to the public of the Northwest region. Supported by Northwest Vision and Media, and in collaboration with Vue Cinemas, the NWFA will present a public screening at the Vue Cinema Southport.

The screening will take place on Thursday 7th of February 2008 at 7.30pm.

The films to be shown will feature life in and around the town of Southport over the past century. This specially selected compilation of fascinating films includes scenes of pioneering aviators flying from Freshfield in 1911 and on the town’s famous beach in the 1930s, including flights in an early autogyro. The area’s long gone car making industry is shown at the Vulcan works in 1913 and you can follow the last launch of nearby Formby’s lifeboat in 1916. Join the Queen Mother as she presents new regimental colours at Harrington Barracks Formby. Southport’s history as a seaside resort is well documented with films of the bathing pool and funfair, as well as all the many other attractions, in a series of promotional films dating from the 1920s through to the 1970s with the town’s movie postcard Wish you were Here.

The Archive’s Service Manager Marion Hewitt said “This is a great opportunity for the people of Southport to enjoy an evening with a difference, and take a look back at life in their area in the past century”.

Northwest Vision and Media’s Alice Morrison said "The North West Film Archive is one of our region's real gems and Northwest Vision and Media is proud to support Southport on Film, enabling local people to access a piece of their region's past".

The evening’s show will be presented by the Archive’s Collections Assistant Geoff Senior. For further information, interview, and footage contact Geoff Senior on 0161 247 3097.
