Terence Davies’ cinematic love letter to his native Liverpool
took this year’s Cannes Film Festival by storm. Specially
commissioned to celebrate the city's year as European Capital of
Culture, Of Time and the City was made for a modest
£250,000. It was produced by Merseyside company Hurricane
Films as part of Digital Departures, a competitive scheme devised
by Northwest Vision and Media with its partners Liverpool Culture
Company, BBC Films and the UK Film Council.
Fiona Gasper, Executive Producer, Liverpool Culture Company, said:
“Digital Departures is our main film project for 2008 and we
are delighted that Of Time and the City has received such
a great reception from the film industry. It’s a very special
film and the public premiere is sure to be extremely popular, so I
would advise people to get their tickets early.”
Widely hailed as a masterpiece, Of Time and the City is
Davies’ first film in almost a decade. It marks a spectacular
return to the spotlight for the director who won world-wide acclaim
for his Liverpool-set classics Distant Voices, Still Lives
(1998) and The Long Day Closes (1992). Images of the city
past and present are magically combined with a wonderfully rich
selection of music (ranging from Peggy Lee to Mahler, Handel to The
Hollies), voices, radio clips, and the director’s voiceover.
‘I wanted to make a blend of history and poetry to capture
what it was like to be a Liverpudlian,’ says Davies, who also
describes his film as ‘a rumination on time and
mortality’.
The other Digital Departures features, horror flick,
Salvage, and drama, Kicks (formerly
Starstruck), will have their own premieres in Liverpool in
the near future. More details will be revealed soon, so keep an eye
on the Vision and Media website in the next few weeks!
