BBC 5Live; development fund opportunities
With the announcement of a £40k Northern Production Fund from the BBC Radio 5Live, Vision+Media identified this as a great opportunity to bring a selection of Northern Indies and Producers together with 5Live to talk frankly about what is available and how the fund will work.
Vision+Media believe that this event will give Indies the knowledge and understanding of 5Live’s direction and audience in order for them to develop pitches and access the fund. The overall aim of which is that 5Live commission these pitches resulting in growth for the Indies.
Building a chain of impact
Vision+Media have recently implemented a Monitoring and Evaluation Framework which is integrated with an
ROI toolkit. This is used to measure the effectiveness of all of our programmes in reaching their overall aim following a chain of impact as shown below:
The event was all about introducing Indies/producers to 5Live so that they could learn from each other and act upon their knowledge. Through a feedback form Vision+Media has been able to evaluate the reaction and learning from the event and therefore measure impact at the first two stages of the chain.

19 feedback forms were received following the event which represents a 95% return rate. Below summarises their responses. The full evaluation report can be viewed to the right.
What happens next?
Clearly the combination of the impressive statistics, comments from attendees and response from 5Live suggests that this event has been extremely successful in achieving its short term impact objectives. The event was relevant and there has been an impressive increase in participants’ knowledge and understanding of the identified outcomes.
Similarly the commitment from attendees to act on their knowledge and access the development fund is very encouraging. In order for the chain of impact to be followed Vision+Media will observe the actions taken by Indies/producers and monitor the distribution of the development fund over the coming months.
This is a fantastic start to the programme with these early signs indicating success in achieving the longer term aim Northern Indies gaining commission from 5Live thus creating growth in the sector.
