The North West is Europe’s second largest media hub, and is internationally recognised for the innovation diversity and quality of its creative and digital offering.
Since the mid-1990s the sector has grown at twice the rate of the UK economy. Recent figures outline that the sector generates around £16 billion GVA accounting for 16% of the North West’s total output.
Over 31,000 companies and 320,000 individuals are employed in the industry and the region is home to some of the world’s most respected media brands. The region is also host to a number of notably successful independent TV and film production companies.
Aside from its thriving media sector, region is recognised as a hub for skill, originality and creativity across the digital and creative sector from computer game and software development to advertising and marketing.
MediaCityUK will be a significant boost to the region’s already thriving creative and digital sector. The 200 acre site (the biggest of its kind in Europe) will not only be home to several key BBC departments, but will also house over 1,000 media related businesses. In addition, the University of Salford, (recently noted for its pioneering research in the creative and digital industries) is creating a pioneering research faculty on the site.
