The BBC has announced a major documentary film-making project to create a definitive self-portrait of Britain today.
The project is based on ‘Life In A Day’, the global user-generated film producer by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Macdonald, which saw 80,000 people from around the world upload their own videos to YouTube. Life In A Day premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was later screened as part of the FutureEverything festival in Manchester in May.
As Britain prepares to step into the spotlight of the world’s media next year for the London Olympics, Britain In A Day aims to create a similar snapshot of contemporary life, but celebrating the diversity of life in Britain. Britain In A Day - a partnership with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free London, the production company behind Life In A Day, will be directed by award-winning director Morgan Matthews working alongside executive producer Kevin Macdonald and Scott Free producer Liza Marshall.
The filming day in question will be Saturday 12th November when the people of Britain will have the opportunity to film something that captures the personality and intimacy of their lives and upload it to a dedicated YouTube channel. Ahead of the day, BBC Learning in partnership with Rosa Productions will be running film-making workshops around the country to encourage people to contribute to the Britain In A Day project and to teach them how to use the tools to do so.
The project will officially be launched on The One Show on 28th October ahead of the filming day and the final film will be shown on BBC Two next year ahead of the Olympic Games.
Further details can be found at www.bbc.co.uk/britaininaday where ‘how-to’ films will be uploaded over the coming weeks and other details about the project as it progresses.
