Media Apprentices at Work

Media Apprentice Daniel Orwin, 18 from Clifton, Manchester takes us through a week's filming as part of his Apprenticeship

Over the last week, four of us on the Media Apprenticeship have been making a film for National Apprenticeship Week. We've been meeting and interviewing apprentices all over the North West, finding out just how valuable apprenticeships are.

It's been a brilliant experience for us, getting out there and doing the things we've always wanted, making films. The four of us have been using professional equipment, hiring out a Z1 camera kit from BBC/DV Solutions and making contacts and arrangements on our own accord.

We began filming at Accrington College, talking to apprentices on a range of courses; from web design to construction, graphics to catering. We filmed them all getting experience in the work place and listened to their thoughts on getting education and hands on skills.

We've also covered events at Old Trafford and the NHS North West head quarters. At Old Trafford, we got to meet employers, training providers and interviewed Sue Price, head of the National Apprenticeship Service. The NHS was a real high point, with us meeting health apprentices and even obtaining an interview with the Secretary of State for Health, Andy Burnham. It was brilliant hearing the benefits of apprenticeships from employers.

The four of us have met different types of apprenticeships through out the week, all across the North West, and it's been really valuable to compare their experiences with ours as fellow Apprentices.

We've had a fantastic time, and been given the responsibility and trust to go out there and make something ourselves. We're still filming, and should start to edit this package together very soon!
