Radio in the North West

The North West is leading hub in the UK for Radio production outside London.

The large radio groups all have stations in the region including Bauer MediaGlobal RadioUTV and GMG Radio. There are also a number of independent stations such as 96.2 FM Revolution RadioChester's Dee 1063 and107.9 Dune FM.

The region is host to a number of independent radio production companies who produce high qulaity programming across all the BBC networks from hard hitting invrestigative journalism right through to comedy and drama. These include All Out ProductionsSmooth Operations,Crosslab Productions, Made In Manchester, Pennine Productions and Woolyback Productions

Market Opportunities

  • In 2011 MediaCityUK will also house the Media Enterprise Centre which will host incubator space for new businesses and a Digital Content Lab, an industry-led, industry-supported “hothouse” for new talent and ideas aligned to opportunities in digital and convergence technologies.
  • The North West is home to the NorthenNET network, which connects concentrations of digital content companies across the wider North and via the backbone to London and International destinations.
  • The first BBC national network to ever leave London, 5Live, will move to the North West in 2011. World Service Sport will also make the North West it’s home at MediaCityUk along with Cbeebies Radio
  • There are over 30 commercial radio stations in the North West making it one of the largest and most competitive regions in the UK. It is estimated that 19% of commercial radio’s workforce is in the North West, higher than in London.
