In 2010 Vision+Media in partnership with BBC Future Media & Technology supported six digital and creative businesses in the Northwest to develop prototype applications for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television), the system through which television services are delivered over broadband Internet.
Vision+Media is committed to helping the Northwest grow and attract businesses and the IPTV development project was designed to build the number of IPTV developers in the region by helping businesses explore new market opportunities, supporting innovation and encouraging collaboration between businesses.
In 2011 Vision+Media remain excited by the opportunities that IPTV presents to businesses in the Northwest and remain committed to growing the number of businesses developing for IPTV platforms. This year the focus has turned to the commercial opportunities around IPTV and a prototype application is being supported which will explore how a safe and secure payment mechanism for apps and content could be integrated on to IPTV platforms.
The development of the prototype will be recorded through a series of development diary blog posts to share knowledge of the challenges of developing for IPTV, and to increase understanding around how traditional broadcast companies can monetize their content outside of the commissioning process.
